weiss sang lead with the shangri-las, late beloved of
the new york dolls et al ("great big kiss" was a
shangri-las song -- "he's good bad but he ain't
evil"). she's put out a very cool solo album,
old-style rock and roll; joey ramone woulda loved it.

Considering that Mary still has the accent, that her voice is about an octave lower, and that girl groups were a big influence on Joey's vocals, Joey Ramone woulda made this album if Mary hadn't.

It is a great album. The Reigning Sound back her and Greg Cartwright wrote nine of the songs on the album. Not that Mary deserves less than full credit for the album. Although her voice is a lot lower, she's still singing the way she did in the sixties. Same phrasing, same emotion.

As for her being an old woman, she's not quite sixty and she's younger than Debbie Harry. I'm not sure how she compares to Ms. Harry's contemporaries, though. --------------
