He quit the band anyway. Why should he care if they replace him one show 
earlier.

I'd have preferred if they postponed it a week (which would give me a chance 
to go. I have a family thing that day and I've never seen Television), but I 
suspect there'd be a lot of logistical and contractual problems with 
rescheduling or cancelling.

But it is in keeping with his new image as a mystical bad-ass.

Now that I think about it, I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that the 
split turning less amicable was something he and Verlaine worked out as a 
bit of media hype/performance art/just plain messing with people.

Lloyd could overplay his hand with this. Talented as he is, he's still in 
the same position as Dave Davies, Brian Jones, or several of the Beach Boys 
not named Brian, an important contributor to a band where it's obvious that 
the REALLY important one is someone else. And when you're in a position like 
that and you overplay your hand... Two words, Mike Love.
