Richard Lloyd

As sort of a guitar god with Television, Richard Lloyd stumbled into cult stardom as one of punk's premier noodlers. He also got to look like a guitar hero by hammering out his overwrought solos. It wasn't too surprising when his '79 solo debut revealed him mainly to be a clever power-pop guy. Unfortunately, he was a power-pop guy with a bad drug problem. Lloyd eventually cleaned up, but lost the interest of American labels. He still managed to release a few '80s albums of catchy pop with great guitar in a variety of styles.

After that, Lloyd stayed busy as a sideman who could make lesser pop musicians seem like serious artists. This decade has seen the re-launch of the solo career, featuring two new albums and a deluxe reissue of 1986's Field of Fire. Last year's The Radiant Monkey was the first proper big deal, with soulful rock that's reminiscent of how Lloyd used to regularly save Matthew Sweet's live show.

Lloyd also wants you to know that the album ranks alongside Television's Marquee Moon, as well as Axis: Bold as Love, Natty Dread, Harvest, and a Patti Smith record that's admittedly worse than anything Lloyd's ever done. The touring act features an impressive power trio, too, with Television drummer Billy Ficca returning to The Nick for the first time since playing with The Washington Squares in '87bso you've got both of the guys who made Television listenable. (Tuesday, July 29, at The Nick.)
