Re: (TV) In search of the great American band

Listers, I am not arguing that Blondie/Debbie Harry is better musician, songwriter, or performer than Patti Smith, Tom Verlaine, or Richard Gere. I am arguing that far more people would have heard of and listened to Television if it were fronted by Debbie Harry. It was meant in jest, and you can take it as a comment on the simple, carnal, and tone-deaf tastes of the music-buying public (the majority of whom are male) or as a backhanded compliment to Blondie. But I still think this conjecture is hard to refute: If Patti Smith looked like Debbie Harry, her career would look very different, too.

Yeah, but that's not charisma, it's just a willingness (desperate need?) to offer yourself as a male masturbatory fantasy. Patti Smith had charisma, Harry was just a Pop Tart.
