Re: (TV) OT: Most distinctive guitar sound

I would think Allan Holdsworth would have to top the list (at least my list), followed closely by Fripp. Largely because both those guys use sounds that don't even sound much like guitar. I never thought of Pete Buck as having a particularly distinctive sound - I don't know that I would recognize it was him without Michael Stipe's voice up front (and I speak as a once-huge REM fan who bought such Stipe-less novelties as the Hindu Love Gods and the Full Time Men).

Are we including acoustic guitarists? Because Leo Kottke's pretty damn distinctive.

Interesting list, Russ. Mine would be something like this:

Tom Verlaine
Robert Fripp
Robert Quine
Neil Young (does make the list for me)
Arto Lindsay
Bill Frisell
Steve Hillage
Ricky Wilson
Steve Albini
Rowland S. Howard
Zoot Horn Rollo
Tom Herman
Jimi Hendrix
Jody Harris

Probably more when I give it some thought...
