Well, we've all seen the rest of the band standing around raring to go 
while Verlaine on his knees fiddling around with pedals, pulling stuff 
out of shopping bags, endlessly tuning etc. Professional musicians do 
this *before* they get on stage. At one gig someone I know (who shall 
remain nameless  - not a member of Television  their entourage) shouted 
at Verlaine from the audience, "This is what happens when you don't 
bother turning up  for rehearsals!".
