Re: More on TV & Smith/Smith's schtick / RE: (TV) Patti w/ Tom show suggestion

Hey Leo,

Thanks for all that info. That should keep me busy for awhile hunting some of
those up.
And I just now remembered that I'm supposed to request bootleg stuff over on
the Yahoo list...d'oh!...sorry.

And I read everyone's post except, like what Robin says, maybe the highly tech
ones I may skip.

Speaking of which...I would like to transfer my Flac shows over to my iTunes.
Anyone have any help for me as to how I can do that? What program to use,
etc?

D.

Hi,

Regarding: If you guys know of other dates w/ Tom playing w/ her that you
would consider 'essential' to hear, please list them on here so that I can
find them.

This is probably more than you d like to know.

I am probably in the minority, but I have always been very disappointed in
recordings of Smith shows when Tom was in her touring band. Number one: I
can never hear him!; he's buried in the mix; and two: he keeps such a low
profile, in fact, he goes way, way overboard in trying not to step musically
on Lenny Kaye's toes.

I have:

I guess I could/recommend the Aug. 1, 1996 show.

By the way, I just finished a new Smith biography, Dancing Barefoot; it was
very well-written but it just reinforced in my mind how over-rated Smith is
as a musical performer/singer/songwriter. Her whole schtick I find tiresome
and pretentious. I think Johnny Rotten got it right when he's quoted in the
book: "Just a bunch of bullshit going on about 'Oh yeah, when I was in High
School', 2 out of 10 for effort.".

Or this from Melody Maker: "Horses is all that is wrong with rock and roll
right now .... There's no way that the completely contrived and affected
'amateurism' of Horses constitutes good rock and roll. That old 'so bad
it's good' aesthetic has been played to death. Horses is just bad.
Period/".

She's a great poet, a great humanitarian, and supposedly a great person, but
it ain't enough for me. As a songwriter: I'll give her 'People Have The
Power', 'Dancing Barefoot', and 'Because the Night' [but which Springsteen
wrote half of] as great; the rest of her oeuvre is pedestrian, and no great
melodies.

Why am I being so mean and risking the wrath of all the Smith fans and esp.
the women on this List? Because I can. Both Lists are moribund; no one
ever reads any of these posts, or if they do, never past the first paragraph
as Leif Joley [smile]. And while I'm at it, the fact that "Just Kids" won
the book award shows how far the awarders' literature standards have fallen.
Also, "Patti, you need to go on a diet; you look like shit and as if you've
been living on Krespe Cremes!"

Leo

I would suggest for your listening pleasure that you get this Patti Smith
show
off of Dime. It's listed as Patti Smith 1996-07-26 Paleo Festival Nyon CH
and
it's one of the shows w/ Tom on guitar. And whatever she pays him to play
w/
her she gets more than her money's worth as he adds so much to her songs.
In
particular her cover of "When Doves Fly" is amazing and they go into this
reggae beat part way through. Anyway it's a great show.

If you guys know of other dates w/ Tom playing w/ her that you would
consider
'essential' to hear, please list them on here so that I can find them.
