(TV) About Tom interview from 2006 /Jimmy Rip

mmm ,to me we are assuming a bunch of things that we really don4t know... ,it
seems that Tom is wanting to get away from the resposabilities and production
of his own 80`s records , i suppose in those times ,labels had the power to
make artists mix their records a certain way ... but in this interview
Verlaine make it seems like a real f up relationship ,and he had almost no
voice in the finish of the product ...again ,we`ll never know ...and less from
the man himself ...
as the actual sound ,mixing of his albums ,i always think
that they are artificial ,cheesy and dated ,begginnig with "words from the
front " ,up to "the wonder " , i love the songs ,and playing ,but hearing
them played live with the kick ass band he had ,with real drum sounds ,is
infinitely better ....
some of the records ,as "flashligth " had good ,natural
,sounding songs next to embarrasing dated ones ,with loud drum samples
,chorused guitars ,and too brigth vocals ...i think "the wonder " it`s the
most damaged in that sense ...
as for Jimmy Rip playing in those ,i tend to
think that he must be played very little ,or nothing ... even if he got
songwriting credits in a couple of songs ...
Jimmy is a monster player ,i cant
think in a better match /sideman for Tom `s solo work ...
he`s living in my
country ,Argentina ,for sometime now ...i see him a couple of times ,he even
got a record out : "Jimmy Rip and the trip " ,with two girls backing him up in
bass and drums ...the record it`s more like Mick Jagger than Tom Verlaine to
me ,he sings mixing english and spanish words in funny ways ... it has tracks
recorded here and some in L.A. in `98 ,they are funky ,blues rock ...
i4m
tempted to ask him via facebook ,all these questions about his participations
on the records ....
Tom contradicts his own words often ,if we could call that
a journalist piece ,but everyone distorts reality ( if there is one ) , and
memories too ...

I
don't remember writing that but I totally agree with that Philip guy anyway.
WFTF is still my least favorite Verlaine album, "lost album" included. Though
the title track has grown on my over the years, starting when I heard Verlaine
do it live during that Oct 2001 benefit show.

Philip once gave a short
but
very harsh critique of the album: "WFTF is
Verlaine musically treading
water
.. ". I like all the other songs and
definitely like it better than The
Wonder or The Lost Album.
