Re: (TV) Marquee Moon to be performed in its entirety

As an Australia, I never ever ever thought I'd get to see Tom Verlaine live, so I don't really care if he tours with the Three Stooges -- I'll be there.
And I'm sure it will be one of the highlights of my life.

I have to say my feelings pretty much mimic Leif's. when I saw the new Brazil videos I was unimpressed and certainly had no desire to want to run out and see them live (not that I plan on having that opportunity any time soon living in NY). Just seems uninspired. And that wacky nonsensical new song (is it even being sung in English?) doesn't help matters.

My reasoning goes like this: Television minus Lloyd but plus Rip could very
well be viewed as a legitimate third version of the group, if they were to be
considered an ongoing creative force, by which I mean a group that creates new
music, not only rehasing old favourites. I watched these new Brazilian videos
and what did I see? Four old fellows rehashing old favourites. This might've
been, to some extent, the case with the 00's shows too, but at least these
shows featured the original line-up of what I consider the best rock group
ever. Yes, members join and leave bands, but admit that there's is a... let's
call it "supernatural" element to some constellations -- here: the guitar
chemistry between Verlaine and Lloyd. If I have to critizise anything Lloyd
did during the 00's shows I saw, it was that he seemed to copy his own solos,
something that noone can accuse Verlaine of -- even though admittedly Lloyd
offered much more staggering guitar pyrotechnics than his partner. And now,
with a "MM" performed all the way through, then for example Jimmy Rip is
supposed to rip off Lloyd's grandiose solo in "Elevation"? To me, there's a
lack of taste on display here. Moreover, it's unimaginative and the reasons
for it are transparent.

To dwell on those videos from Brazil a little further -- I saw these four lads
doing the decades-old stuff in an absolutely non-exceptional way, and I
thought: "They're doing this for the money." Perhaps not entirely, because it
must be fun to get to play together with your friends in an exotic country,
where it's nice and warm and which Verlaine, Smith and Ficca perhaps haven't
visited before. And upon that, get paid a handsome sum. Nobody has the right
to deny anyone else the right to earn some easy money, but I believe that we
should all be frank about it: it's all about the money now. First Brazil, then
Japan and North Korea, then Australia and next year probably Saudi Arabia. Who
wouldn't be happy as a little child to go there and get paid for it?

Do we know for sure that Richard won't play ATP?
Has anyone gotten more information about the May 24 show that Richard is
scheduled to play at Bowery Electric?
It's scheduled but the tickets are not on sale yet.

I don't think there's anything sleazy about it. Music is meant to be
heard
live. I'd be happy if a no-name bar band was playing MARQUEE MOON live;
it's a
bonus to have most of the original lineup doing it. Just wish it were a
bit
closer to Boston! Or that there was any chance of a decent recording
emerging
from the show (or a broadcast).

Let's remember, Lloyd voluntarily left
Television. Perhaps they should be billed as the Tom Verlaine Band, but
that's
another debate.

Seems like the Melbourne show doesn't generate much enthusiasm in
here... and
I have to agree about it. If "MM" was to be performed in another
half-backwards part of the world -- like Scandinavia, for instance -- I'd
definitely attend because this is, after all, Television, although not in
its
optimal line-up. An event like this without Lloyd in the equation --
isn't
there something... sleazy about it?
