(TV) Re: TV Tribute, Beck "Midnite Vultures"

Hey Mike and everyone,
Hope everyone had a good holiday. I've been playing on my own, slowly trying
to find something new to add to the songs. I figure when I get together with
Mike and Jackson we'll create our own dynamic so I'm not locking into
anything just yet.

I've heard Beck's new record and it sounds good. Mike's observation sounds
familiar to me. On "Mutations" there was a song, "O Maria" that, to me,
sounded just like John Lennon's unreleased "Case Of The Blues", even the
line, sung to the same melody, "...Everybody knows...the fabric of
foll-y...", very similar to Lennon's, "Everyone knows...it's a case of the
blu-ues...". "Bottle of Blues" had that very Led Zeppelin "Houses of the
Holy"-sounding acoustic riff. Another song sounded to me just like "Such A
Night" by Dr. John. On "Odelay" there was that song that was an almost
over-the-top rip-off of the Stones' "The Last Time". I think this is a
response to sampling in hip-hop. To me that's always been a part of Beck's
schtick. His approach to pop music seems to be a lot about appropriation
from the canon of pop music. He's basically a folk writer with a blues
sensibility utilizing hip-hop techniques. He makes really interesting and
cool sounding pop records, but for me he's lacking some kind of soulfulness,
directness and urgency that I love in Dylan, the Kinks, the Velvets,
Television, Richard Thompson, and a myriad of others. I find Beck coldly
narcotic. Seductive but overly clever. Anyone else?

Also, Mike, what period is "The Countess of Hong Kong"?
Scott
