Apple's MP3 equivalent is AAC, which is lossy. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Audio_Coding.

AIFF is the equivalent of WAV, basically. So it's lossless, but the tradeoff is that it needs roughly 10MB of disk space per minute of stereo audio (as per Wikipedia).

Whats' the standard format for iTunes?

I heard Apple's AIFF format is lossless.  Is that the iTunes default?
