An amazing Lester Bangs piece appeared fairly recently in the NY Times.  It
was his liner notes for a reissue of old recordings by a 30s German vocal
group called the Comedian Harmonists.  The reissue project, originally slated
for release in the early 80s, was postponed, and did not see the light of day
until just this past year.  Upon its release, rock crit John Rockwell edited
Lester's old notes and had them printed in the Times.  If you can find the
essay on the Times website, it really makes a great read.  (The Comedian
Harmonists CD, though quite worthwhile, does not include Bangs' notes.)
