(TV) Moby Grape

Hi all,

On the recommendations on this list, I picked-up the MOBY GRAPE debut on CD.
I'm very impressed. I was familiar with "Hey Grandma" from the Move's debut LP,
but that alone would not have gotten me to buy this album - what a mistake that
would have been. Folk, rock, and a little r'n'b - a great mix. It's dated, but
like Love's FOREVER CHANGES, it's easy to get past that on the basis of the
songs. It also has a great sound, production-wise: full, plenty of bass, nice
use of stereo, etc. I have nothing to compare it against, but the CD reissue
seems pretty good (though they perpetuate one of my main peeves with CD
reissues: nowhere does it list the original year of release!).

Some thoughts on individual tracks: At this point, there's nothing I *don't*
like, but "Sitting By The Window" might be my favorite track. Other favorites:
"Mr. Blues" and "Omaha". "Ain't No Use" sounds suspiciously like "I'm Not
Sayin'", the Gordon Lightfoot song Nico recorded for the A-side of her first
single in 1965 (more recently included on the CLASSIC YEARS compilation, and
covered by Dean Wareham and his wife on the CAGNEE AND LACEE EP). Anyone else
catch the similarity?
