Re: (TV) old but new

AHH SCOTT, YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY A MAN OF DISCERNING TASTE. NOT MANY
RECOGNIZED THE BRILLIANCE OF THE PRETY THINGS. THEY WERE VISIONARIES.
AND THEY HAVEN'T GIVEN IN OR GIVEN UP TO THIS DAY. I SAW THEM DO AN
ACOUSTIC SET AT THE WFMU RECORD SHOW MAYBE 18 MONTHS AGO &, UNLIKE TOM,
PHIL MAY WAS NEITHER LANKY NOR TALL. I LIKE YOUR TASTE.

Hello all,

Around 1980, as a freshman in high school, I had a garage punk band called
Dexter and the Dandelions. My bass player (and best friend's) older brother
was my idol, and we would listen to his copies of Marquee Moon, Adventure,
the Sex Pistols and the Kids Are Alright in his basement room after school
and play to them. Then we would run through covers: See No Evil, Wild Thing,
Bodies, Career Opportunities, Miracle Man, Beat On The Brat, and Substitute
were our favorites as I recall. Another older kid, Hugh Lane (are you still
out there, Hugh?) was my mentor. He was a kind of Lester Bangs to me. I gave
him guitar lessons (he was amazed I could play Pinball Wizard and Legal
Matter) and he would let me borrow his Creem and Punk Magazines and his
records: The Modern Lovers, the Small Faces, the Pretty Things, the Stooges,
the New York Dolls, Nuggets, Them, and, of course Television were my
favorites. Luckily my mom was young and loved music (she was a big Beatles
and Who, Pete Townshend fan - fellow eastern meditation types) so she let me
play these records to death. In 1980 the first single I bought (at Bleecker
Bobs when it was on MacDougal Street) was the Little Johnny Jewel 7" on Ork
records. I still have it, and it still gives me chills when I hear those
opening notes and that guitar tone. Also the Voidoid's "Blank Generation"
(the Ork records EP version), very similar vibe that instantly brings me
back to the lower east side in the late 70's. The influence of those records
on my own sensibility has been incalculable.

Responding to an earlier thread, my favorite unreleased Television song is
definitely "Adventure", although I wish there was a studio version of Judy.
The bootlegged version is unfortunately so warbled. It reminds me so much of
"Venus", which along with "See No Evil" is my all-time favorite Television
song.

Hope everyone on the list is well and a hearty greeting to the new list
members.

Scott
