from the Verlaine interview:

>"I've seen a lot of people getting into Jazzmasters because of me, and,
well, people >don't know what they're in for. I mean if you're looking for
endless sustain, you're >going to have to get it out of your hands (laughs).

Ah, something I can relate to well, as I'm sure most guitarists on this list
can. My first electric guitar (two years ago) was a crappy little Mexican
Strat which...well, it wasn't so bad. I really dug it a lot. Then I switched
to some humbucking Les Paul-style Epiphone, and I thought I liked it better
because it was easier to make high notes sustain and get pinch harmonics out
of the thing. Then it got stolen this past Christmas (along with my amp, a
Big Muff I had Howard "Mick" Davis from Electro Harmonix rebuild for me, and
one of those Line 6 Delay Modelers...all taken from my apartment whilst I was
sleeping there! ugh!). Still haven't gotten a new guitar, but I've been
assisting a fellow computer graphics major at my school in learning on -yup-
a cheap Fender Strat. And you know what? I've found I like Fenders better.
Longer neck scale plus single coil pickups, plus a tendency to be more stable
with a higher action, means you've got to sort of fight the thing to get a
good sound of it. It may be tougher to be consistant at first, yes, but the
amount of attack from the picking hand and the amount of pressure (and, where
appropriate, vibrato) from the fretting hand can really come through and give
a fairly intense sound. If/when I can scrounge up enough to get another axe
and amp, I'm going Fender again.

Incidentally, anyone know what exact model Strat Tom's using these days? I
was at the Chicago show, and I'm guessing he probably used it in Seattle and
on those European dates as well...
