Re: (TV) A new focus for the TV mailing list

On the other hand, when the list began, Tom was rather inactive, and it's been a gradual incline since then. These things ebb and flow.

Maurice decide between them or us.

Why not do both? I've been on the J-list for years. Don't forget Michael Olcsvary and Gregg Lopez, either. I may be a special case, though, having done two tribute shows on the last two Jandek days. And there's a TV tie-in, in that Tom's vocal on "Mars" reminds me more than a bit of Janky.

Other musical figures? Lately I've (inevitably) been in a Branca phase, although I've also been listening to the altogether poppier Rhys Chatham box set. (Well, the "Two Gongs" piece isn't poppy, but the guitar pieces are. Sadly, a bit lighter weight than the Branca, but more approachable). More than a bit of La Monte Young, as well. On the more rock side of things, Mark Kozelek's latest (Sun Kil Moon's _Ghosts of the Great Highway_, 2003) was excellent.

But what about _bands_? Melochrome's latest has held up very, very well, although they're on hiatus. Apparently there's a potential buzz about a Polvo reunion, as they're all in the studio together, but Ash is on the other side of the board. One can hope, though. Silkworm's latest brings the rock on some fine tracks, although unfortunately the experiments don't quite latch as easily. Similar with Joel Phelps/the Downer Trio's latest--some astonishingly pure instant classics, and some less successful experiments. Seam's been inactive, and I'm still not receptive to The New Year (ex-Bedhead), although I do have to give the new one a try. As far as I know, though, they all fail on the "repressed bandmates" requirement--they all seem like rather happy organizations.

There's music I really want to hear, and I'm generally not hearing it right now, so my own recourse is to go make it.
