(TV) Pirelli Calendar Girls

I think the story goes like this -- Tom was said to have said "_I_ wouldn't have done it _that_ way," when asked about what he thought of LC's cover.  Which I've always found exceedingly odd, since as you pointed out, I thought the cover really close to the original.

I also like the album "Mainstream" -- that song "My Bag" makes me laugh -- who else writes a line like "Pirelli calendar girls wrestling in body lotion"?  Actually, I think "Mainstream" may be my favorite because its cynicism is hilarious.

Over the years, I collected a bunch of LC rareties, if you're interested.  And, yes, Phil, LC was big in Europe -- well, when I was a teenager, at least.  But it's funny you mention that because I think he's rather obscure in the US.  I went to college with his sister-in-law who happened to live on my floor when I was a freshman, once I had my door open and was playing LC on my stereo, she walked by and said "wow, I didn't know anyone actually listens to this.  My sister is married to him."

I'd like to see more evidence that Verlaine actually WAS dismissive -
as we know, he's not the easiest guy to read, and I can't see how he
wouldn't be flattered by LC's note-for-note cover. Both versions on
the deluxe RATTLESNAKES reissue (live and studio) hew extremely
closely to the original.

By the way, once again, I'll say how fantastic and album this is, and
what a nice job they did with the deluxe reissue (aside from a typo
here and there). Sound quality is improved over the standard US CD,
too. Finally, the bonus track "Beautiful City" is a fully-produced
outtake from the RATTLESNAKE sessions and is as strong as anything
else on the record.

I'll definitely check out EASY PIECES next.
