Another interesting fan-driven thing along those Marillion (and BTW
they do suck) lines is what Bid from the Monocrome Set (who don't suck
at all) does these days.  He books his tours through fans who cobble
together pickup bands for him.  I spoke to him after a show about how
cool this was... really a miracle of the internet age.  Part of the
conversation went like this:

Me:  So, like through the web you're able to be in touch with everyone
in any given town who knows your music and is a musician.   That's so
cool.  In old days you could only do that if you were...

Bid & Me simultaneously:  ... Chuck Berry or someone!

My feeling is that Tom is too exacting about his collaborators to make
this a viable touring option, but it would be interesting to see what
would happen if he were to cough up his demos to a band (say, Yo La
Tengo or someone) who could do the backing tracks without him, and he
could finish it with guitar and vocals.  Nah, it would never work.

At least maybe he'd get so pissed off at how wrong they got it that
he'd have to replace all the parts himself, which would result in... a
Tom Verlaine album, wonder of wonders.
