Re: (TV) TV Cover Star - The Wire

/Around:/

'...nocturnal vignettes like the appropriately titled "Rain, Sidewalk"
and, on "Wheel Broke" what sounds like a buckled and distorted take on a
generic 60s guitar instrumental. Mostly though the mood is semi-Ambient
with exquisite and cryptic pieces like "Shadow Walks Away" where
Verlaine's guitar sends transmissions from a lonely place, or glows in
phospherence as on "Curtains Open"......."Meteor Beach", a creaky
Hawaiian tune with Syd Barrett-like sections of slide and echo. A
beautifully realised collection, /Around /is remarkably ego-free...

/Songs and Other Things:

/'is the more compelling of the two...few of the razor-sharp jags of
/Marquee Moon./..These skeletal songs still employ a typically oblique
geometry...his vocals, which can be dreadful live sound confident
here...his lyrics mix chivalrous romanticism and surreal
observation......although the smart swaggering "From Her Fingers" could
have come straight off /Adventure, /most of the songs have a different
type of chemistry...At first [the album] sounds simple to the point of
throwaway, but gradually gives up its secrets after a number of plays,
like a series of puzzles, each with a piece missing.

Cheers

Graham
