Robin -- The disc that got me hooked on Thompson -- admittedly a
little late in the game -- was a 1991 one-off promo CD called "The
Hannibal Sampler," collecting cuts from his first post-Fairport solo
years up through "Shoot Out the Lights". It was never available
commercially but pops up on ebay fairly frequently, and you could do
worse than going to iTunes and replicating the playlist for a decent
sampler.

Tear Stained Letter
When I Get To The Border
Shoot Out The Lights
Wall Of Death
The Wrong Heartbeat
Angels Took My Racehorse Away
Flee As A Bird
Roll Over Vaughn Williams
Poor Will And The Jolly Hangman
Don't Renege On Our Love
I'll Regret It All In The Morning
Calvary Cross
Night Comes In

Throw in "A Sailor's Life" from Fairport's "Unhalfbricking" for a
pretty staggering example of his early style.

There's also very good acoustic bootleg, "Solo Acoustic, Town Crier,
Pawling, NY 3/7/91," that can be found on dime (or contact me
offlist). David Byrne shows up as special guest vocal on a few songs,
which will either recommend it or not.
