Re: (TV) Anyone know how our NY friends are doing?

Red Hook is in bad shape, my friends who live there have suffered a
lot of property damages. People I know who own a small wine store
there have suffered a lot of damages, the store won't open for a
while. I have not been downtown yet - above, say 40th street in
Manhattan, we did not suffer much at all. We didn't lose power, and we
have water. Some buildings, like my office, didn't have heat until
today, but it's not too bad.

Public transportation is still difficult for some people, but everyone
I talked to today said that they had not problem with trains or buses
(that are in service).

As individuals, there is just so little that one can do (other than
helping one's friends or making donations to the usual charities)
because what people actually need as things like water (hot water),
electricity, cell phone connection, schools to reopen, public
transportation and gas. I offered to go help my friends clean their
apartments/stores in Red Hook, but they said that they are okay for
now, and to make the trip down there would be too difficult because
there is still no subway downtown. I wouldn't have minded at all to
walk to the pier and take the ferry there - but they seem to think
that it's a silly idea.

Essentially, I think people generally fall into three groups (1) not
affected at all by the storm, (2) no property damage, but no
water/electricity (may or may not have been evacuated from home) and
(3) people who lost a lot - apartments trashed by the flood, severe
damages to houses, etc.

Most of Manhattan should have power back by the end of this week,
which means also water will be back. Subway will take a while to be
fully functional again. People in suburbs, Staten Island, Long Island,
many places in Jersey (closer to Manhattan, like Hoboken) will take a
while as well.
