Re: Real fans travel far/ Dreaming? / Japan in May / RE: (TV) Television* concerts 2013

Excellent points Leif. You touch on two points I feel strongly about. I know
that time and money are precious commodities and that not everyone can drop
everything and travel long distances to follow an artist they love. But as we
and the bands we love get older the chances to see them tend to become very
rare indeed (unless we're talking about some corporate dinoosaurs like
Aerosmith, who will continue on as animatronic versions of themselves long
into the next century). As a fan, you've got to try to find a way. In my case
I've logged thousands of miles following the Stooges and the Bad Seeds, just
to name a few. And I've done a few road trips to see Television, Tom solo, and
Tom's & Jimmy's Music for Films shows. Which brings me to the next point...
I am sorry to hear that the crowd at the Rumour show spoiled it for you Leif.
I share your pain. My hometown of Chicago is really bad in this respect
too.The problem is that the number of truly engaged fans of most any band that
plays club sized venues these days is painfully small. Everyone else is there
because they were told to go by Pitchfork or Time Out magazine. They don't
care about the music, they're there for a night out and to pose. When my wife
and I traveled to NYC to see Tom at the Bowery Ballroom in 2006 I told a girl
who was talking loudly over the music to shut the hell up and that she should
go down to the BB's (very nice) downstairs bar if she didn't care about the
music. She replied that she paid the same for her ticket as I did and would do
as she pleased. So (and I am not proud of this, people... well, maybe a
little) I threatened to punch her in the face. Appalled, she appealed to my
wife in that "is he serious?" way, and my wife, to her everlasting credit,
just shrugged at her and said "I'd go down to the bar if I were you." We are
two of a kind... years ago she threatened a couple who were talking over an
acoustic Bernard Butler show -- she said she was going to set the girl's hair
on fire. They moved to the back.

Television* concerts 2013

Or perhaps you should consider going to Japan?

I just mean -- nothing is impossible in this world. Not even for *real* fans
to travel to faraway countries to see their favourite artists. That's, after
all, what make these fans *real* fans.

Nothing I want to brag about, really... but anyway: In November this Swede
travelled to the US to see Graham Parker's reunion with the Rumour. Yes, all
the way from Sweden to Annapolis, MD and Philadephia, PA. This Swede did this
because he's a *real* fan of Graham Parker, and he had the urge to see the
Rumour in action since he missed them the first time they were around, +30
years ago.

I have to say that the American audience at Theatre of Living Arts in Philly
sucked (they spoke during the entire show, and when I tried to hush a young
woman down, she told me to f-ck off), but that's not to say that Americans in
general are threatening or hostile towards foreigners and/or Europeans. Same
probably with Japanese audiences. They might not look exactly like most of us
on this list, but that should not keep neither me nor Mr Leo J Casey nor
anyone else on this list from going to Tokyo to see Television. Not if we're
*real* fans!
