It's quite possible that these were in-the-ear monitors, they're really nice.
I see Dennis has mentioned this, and I'll just note that I have seen some
performers use them even when there were stage monitors for others.  The
earpieces will keep out most of the stage volume and allow more control.

Cash.  They'll book more shows by playing as Television and doing the
MM songs, but it's not very interesting to me now that I've seen them
a few times both with Lloyd and Ripp.  I opted not to see them in Boston
a couple of months ago.  Now, if Tom ever tours solo, I'd see him in a
red-hot minute.
