Punker Ian Dury dead at 57
LONDON -- Ian Dury, who sang about living hard in "Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n'
Roll," died Monday of coloerectal cancer. He was 57.

According to the online source Music 365, Dury -- rocker, collegiate lecturer,
artist and actor -- died quietly. "Ian passed away peacefully with all his
family around him," read a statement from his press agent.

A former lecturer at Canterbury College of Art, Dury rose to fame in the 1970s
with proto-punk band The Blockheads. The band was known for such songs as "Sex
and Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll" and "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick."

By the mid-1980s, when new wave took over the British music scene, Dury pursued
other interests. He painted, wrote commercial jingles and acted in films,
including Peter Greenaway's "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover" and
Roman Polanski's "Pirates."

He re-released a solo effort, "Mr. Love Pants" -- first released two years ago
-- earlier this month, and performed live in support of the album despite his
illness. A charismatic performer with a disabled leg stemming from childhood
polio, Dury was involved with CancerBACUP, a United Kingdom cancer education
and support organization.

He is survived by his second wife, Sophy, and four children.
