RE: (TV) carl theodor dreyer

chelsea girl,

You are quite right---I mixed up some of Dreyer's films with Murnau's in my last posting.

But I still think there's some merit in my theory that Lean was heavily influenced by the motor cycle segments in Dreyer's "They Caught the Ferry", (maybe even 'stole' some of the "tension, release, tension" sequences for Lawrence's opening motorcycle ride through the Cloud's Hill countryside). I don't really think Lean and Dreyer have much of anything in common in their actual film styles or the subjects they chose. And I wouldn't put Lean in the same league with Dreyer who was clearly the superior filmmaker.

actually you're thinking of another filmmaker, f. w.
murnau (the subject of apparent caricature in the new
film _shadow of the vampire_ -- am going to see it
tonight and will find out for sure). carl th. dreyer
is best known for _the passion of joan of arc_ with
maria falconetti. i learned all this at the internet
movie database, and you can too:
