Re: (TV) Monk/Trane's influence on Verlaine's playing



Gee, and I though no one noticed.
The reason I brought this up is because of "Little Johnny Jewel."  While I
agree that there aren't a lot of harmonic similarities to Monk in the intro, it
strikes me that there are in Tom's use of space and phrasing - a 2-or-3 note
segment, a breath, another little lick, a longer pause, then a flurry of notes
that lead up to - a pause, and something that's almost ( but not quite )
unrelated.  Of course, the main break is another matter ( and damn if it still
isn't as startling now as it was way back then ), but the beginning...I know
Coltrane's often been cited as an influence, along with Albert Ayler, and I
figure if he's hip to them he'd have to know something of Monk's work as well.
