Re: (TV) Monk/Trane's influence on Verlaine's playing

Monk? Not hardly. Tom doesn't play those bizarre intervals that Monk
reveled in. Hell, you can often tell a Monk tune in 2-4 notes because
no one else would pick those notes! There's more of the 'Trane modality
in Tom's playing, but that's not unique to Trane.

I have, however, determined a huge influence: Nuggets. It's a compilation
put out by Lenny Kaye back in the mid-70's of pre-psychedelic artyfacts
that clearly influenced Tom. The Electric Prunes, Count Five, Amboy
Dukes, they're all here and all weave a thread through a lot of TV.

Originally a double album, it was re-released a few years back as a
stunning 4 CD set. Songs from my childhood vaguely remembered from AM
radio came rushing back like the hot kiss at the end of a wet fist.

There's a lot in TV's music that harkens back to these rough Nuggets,
acknowledged by TV in their live covers of Count Five (Psychotic
Reaction) and the Chocolate Watchband.
