Compared to the guy from Of Montreal, Meloy's songwriting seems almost ok.
Most songs are lyrically just a parade of Kevin Barnes' ability to use a
dictionary and show off his "intellectualism". At first I thought it was cute,
but after the ~5th album it just got tiresome. Few lines from vegan in furs:
Yes the dark epoch is over I've found my efeblum
Then passed Ernst's mausoleum
defended by a rook
Who shot a look so virulent it pierced me like a hook
The
palaver of Solipsists exploding in my skull
Yeah and we both despise all of
the academic swine
Who made the author of "Discus Ulysses" benign

I didn't think it was possible to write a bad lyric in which the writer talks about despising swine. Live and learn.

When I listen to Elvis Costello or Leonard Cohen, I have to be careful because I find myself trying to write like them, the usual result being a very bad song that sounds like I've been listening to too much Elvis Costello and Leonard Cohen. I suspect this lyric had a similar genesis. Maybe too much Marc Bolan, as well, though no matter how deep the word salad got with Elvis, Leonard, and Marc, their lyrics still had some musical quality to them. I can't imagine how anyone could sing the above lines, and I might be better off not knowing.
