Re: (TV) Vanity Fair/lost album

Hi all,

You know this is a favorite topic of mine...

We don't know what
would have been on the "lost" album; we know at least 2 tracks from FLASH
LIGHT were recorded there ("One Time at Sundown", subsequently re-recorded,
and "The Scientist Writes a Letter", one version of which made it to FLASH
LIGHT and another came out as a b-side). We know at least one good track never
made it to a b-side and still sits in the vaults ("Ah Lee", which appears on
more recent copies of the VANITY FAIR comp), so it's possible more tracks were
recorded in 1986 but not re-recorded for FLASH LIGHT or released as b-sides
during the 1987-1990 period. If the only material that was recorded for the
"lost" album is the stuff that appears on VANITY FAIR, then I think Fontana
probably made the right call -- FLASH LIGHT is the slightly stronger album.
But I also wouldn't be surprised to learn that there was more stuff in the
vaults in 1986, although I think the chance of hearing it anytime soon is
very, very remote...

I agree that quite a few strong tracks came out of
those sessions, though, "Anna", "Vanity Fair", "Call Me The", and the 2 that
appeared on FLASH LIGHT among them.

To Rex's point below, the VANITY FAIR
tracks that did not appear on CD (and were taken from vinyl or, in one case,
from a circulating cassette) are:

"Caveman - Flashlight", "Circling", "One
Time at Sundown (1986 London Version)", "Marquee Moon (Live)" -- vinyl

"The
Scientist Writes a Letter (Paris Version)", "Ah Lee" -- cassette

"Vanity
Fair" has appeared once on CD -- it was one of the CD single b-sides from THE
WONDER, I believe.

The lost album is
definitely a kind of tragedy... almost all of it is out
there to be heard, but
it can never be completely extricated from Flash
Light, and that's a double
shame because Flash Light is so great as well.

It would be nice to know, some
day and somehow, if there are any other
tracks from those sessions which have
yet to surface. The idea of a
"deluxe reissue" of Flash Light with all the
lost stuff is obviously a pure
fantasy, but it sure would be cool... I'm
pretty sure "Caveman -
Flashlight", "Smoother Than Jones", "Circling" and
"Vanity Fair" have never
been released on CD in any form.
