Re: (TV) End-of-year Review / Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

Yes, that was fun hearing the reversed clip from "Days," & then playing The
Byrds' Mr. Tambourine Man intro. against it to compare. We don't need to t
ake Lloyd's word for it. Hearing (in reverse) is believing that "Days' deri
ves from it! Thanks for the reversed clip Joe.
Btw, that quiz question re. a Byrds B-side Tom especially likes has at leas
t one alternate answer. In one of the 1970s or 1980s interviews I collected
(I'd need to search for it to nail down the source & date) Tom talks about
liking the Byrds a lot, & notes The Byrds had some really great B-sides, n
aming one especially. But in that particular interview it isn't "She Don't
Care About Time" he names as a fave B-side, but "Everybody's Been Burned,"
a David Crosby song, instead. I always thought some of the angst-y themes i
n Television's lyrics sounded reminiscent of those found in "Everybody's be
en Burned."  I like that Byrds album that compiled singles, including
B-sides. I agree Gene Clark wrote some excellent Byrds song. I'm reminded t
he 1980s L.A. Paisley Underground band, Rain Parade, has a lot of Byrds inf
luence in their sound, to these ears.
Sadly, Dum Dum Girls is the only band that newly provoked a "wow" from me i
n 2014. It's become harder for to find music that unequivocally "zings" me
anymore, so I'm grateful when I occasionally find some. I'd been somewhat f
amiliar with Dum Dum Girls a few years but didn't get real familiar with th
eir catalog & didn't see them live till last year. Dum Dums' Dee Dee has a
rare talent, imo, for consistently writing & delivering emotive, compelling
vocal melodies,  a major reason I also like Mazzy Star (though the tw
o band's styles are different, DDGs being more pop-y). Btw, I have to thank
Scott Simpson for kindly sharing audio files taken from his 5 Mazzy Star m
aster tapes of 1990s gigs he recorded which I shared further via DIME & via
fan sites. Scott made some memorable recordings. There were other ban
ds I found listenable enough in 2014, but I'll just cite my one new "wow"!-

I've been playing Mr Tamb Man for years, but if you asked me to play the ri
ff
backwards, I'd never be able to just pull it off - I'd need a few days of

working it out.  But then again, I'm not RL either!

IMO, all the great Byrds songs are either covers or Gene Clark songs.
 "Here
Without You" is another one of my faves.

Probably less the mastering than the cassette reproduction.  Some of t
hat
stuff was just awful, but there's also something to be said for the grit
that tape compression brings.
